PostSubject: Live Common Carp required   Live Common Carp required Icon_minitimeMon Apr 15 2013, 04:32

I have a medium sized pond (approx 30metre diameter) and I wish to try raising Carp for home consumption.
Does anyone have Carp for sale?
Can anyone suggest where I might be able to purchase some fish?
Thank you.

Very touchy subject here on a site dedicated to the safe keeping and catch and release of Carp.

If you done a simple google you would get all the info u are looking for

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

In response to your points

"If you done a simple google you would get all the info u are looking for"

This is not the case. I have googled and went through a number of different avenues trying to purchase live fish without any luck.
It is always difficult finding non-standard stuff for sale in Ireland.
Maybe you should try and google it yourself before declaring google to be the answer to all of lifes questions.

"Very touchy subject here on a site dedicated to the safe keeping and catch and release of Carp."

I find that statement most peculiar. Is this site solely for people who don't eat fish?
My intention is to keep fish in an optimum environment and occasionally catch one for my supper.
If that is against the ethos of this site then I agree I am in the wrong place.

Well mate,

Where did Tony declare that google is "the answer to all lifes questions? The information you are searching for IS readily available through Google if you have the intelligence to look in the correct place.

Don't come on here with a bad attitude because YOU found the information misleading.

On the issue of Common Carp for consumption, may I reccomend a box of Captain Birdseye Fishfingers from the frozen isle, in any Tesco in the country, as a alternative. These fishfingers ARE standard and readily available in Ireland, and will probably float for quite some time in your pond, providing you with the catching cooking and eating circumstance you are pursuing.

Thanks Carpus_Aurelius.
Your concern for Tony is very touching.

As I already stated I could not find the answer to my question on google.
If anyone does have any useful suggestions it would be appreciated.

i had koi carp in a pond and they need plenty of oxygen or they will get disease and die,you would have too have the pond pump and filtration going 24/7 too keep them in good condition an alternative would be too have goldfish they are much hardier than carp and cheaper too buy not sure what they taste like but,or maybe save your self the hastle and get yourself a battered cod in the chipper

there's a few club lakes and syndicates around the country and I think if you pay the right fee, they will be only too happy to let you take one carp over 10kg for the table, they need the smaller ones to grow on and the bigger ones i think taste better
Any more you catch after that should be returned though. some of the fish might have a slight twinge of boilies off the flesh, but took home in a bin and left in your bath for a few days, they should taste ok. remember to take the scales off the big plated mirrors, as they can get stuck in your throat and cause discomfort.
I think that just about covers it.

First off Id say its more trouble than its worth .There was a programme on Bbc harping back to the dayss the monks introduced the species as a food source and the chef said that lake carp were not a good option as they tasted of silt and the way around this was they had a series of locks with freshwater running through and the fish were held over a fortnight. Even after all this was done the end product wasnt very desireable. Each to their own but as regards course fish I believe in catch and release period. Oh and google does have all the info as said

JohnHollywood I hope you have not been listening to stories on the foreign chat forums , and are after a particular Carp, know as The Carp of Knowledge..

According to the story, an ordinary Carp ate nine tiger nuts that fell into the Well of Wisdom (aka The Lough) from nine Tiger Nut trees that surrounded the well. By this act, the Carp gained all the world's knowledge. Moreover, the first person to eat of its flesh would, in turn, gain this knowledge.

Id have my doubts...

Gills in Cobh do a mighty cod supper, a highly reccomended alternative!

Surely a wind up as, Al says (there are various Irish sources from which to buy carp, albeit ornamentally), but IF true, isn't it infinitely preferable that someone who wants to eat carp actually proposes to rear them personally rather than plundering natural populations?!!!! Suspect

Wasn't long before the racism appeared

Lets not forget boys the carp we fish for only got that way because of selective breeding by fish farmers for food. If Europeans never ate carp there would be no king commons , no mirrors and leather carp.

If a guy wants to buy and grow his own on and eat them , more power to him I say , at least he ain't knicking them from one of our waters.

Lets not get are knickers in a knot and keep it logical.

Keep it logical ?? the Fcuk!! Im sure this fella has big plans for breeding programmes , Its not like hes giving anything back to an already limited stock of carp in this country an he can say it whatever way he wants but all hes doing in taking from it ! not enough carp to go around for us let alone some over indulgent muppet!
